Questions about age and health among Congress members have sparked a debate on the implementation of term limits. The issue of whether such limits might restrict voter choice and impact the retention of institutional knowledge is discussed among lawmakers.
Sen. Tim Sheehy, R-Mont., expressed his views on letting voters decide. He believes voters already impose term and age limits through elections. ‘The voters will decide who they want. We have term limits and age limits and that is the voter,’ Sheehy said.
Similarly, Rep. Glen Grothman, R-Wisc., supported Sheehy’s stance. Grothman emphasized voters’ rights to choose their representatives, referring to Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, aged 92. ‘I think the voters—when they’re electing, if they want to elect Grassley, you shouldn’t take that right away from them,’ Grothman noted.
Concerns over elderly members’ health resurfaced, especially after Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., 71, unexpectedly passed away last week. Prior incidents involved Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., 84, and Rep. Tom Kean Jr., R-N.J., 57, who faced public speculation due to health-related absences.
Sen. Mark Warner, D-Va., highlighted personal responsibility over enforced limits. He is wary of broad legislative term limits while emphasizing self-awareness among lawmakers. Warner stated, ‘People ought to know when it’s time to step aside.’
Disagreement among lawmakers persists. Some argue senior members extend their tenure unnecessarily, impacting fresh ideas. Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, advocates term limits as a solution. ‘I’d like to see limits on everybody. The best limit would be term limits and that’s what we should pass,’ Cruz argued.
Cruz’s proposal involves a constitutional amendment, capping senators at two terms and House members at three. Cruz asserts, ‘An overwhelming majority of Americans support that,’ declaring it an effective solution.
Sen. Roger Marshall, R-Kan., supports term limits based on historical intentions. ‘I think the last thing that we need are professional politicians up here,’ Marshall remarked. He emphasized the founding fathers’ design against long-tenure politicians.
