Homeless Encampment on Manhattan’s West Side Sparks Concerns

Residents and visitors on Manhattan’s West Side are voicing concerns over a sprawling homeless encampment stretching about 12 blocks. Many believe the city isn’t doing enough to manage the tents, trash, and reported illegal activities visible in the area.

Joan G., who lives nearby, expressed her embarrassment concerning the encampment’s state. Talking to Fox News Digital, she hesitated to reveal her full name. Similar sentiments were echoed by “Joe the Dog Man,” a security guard at a nearby construction site. He criticized the city’s response, stating, “I just don’t think enough is being done.”

“This seven-day stuff, or whatever it is now, is really not working,” Joe remarked, noting the city’s revised removal policy after it paused encampment sweeps.

The revised policy allows homeless-services teams seven days to perform outreach before dismantling encampments. Joe believes more significant enforcement is needed, particularly giving police greater authority.

NYPD officers have been patrolling near the encampments, which have sparked complaints relating to blocked sidewalks, trash, and alleged illegal activities such as drug use and prostitution. Some individuals appear to be drawing power from utility poles, leading to a response from the NYPD.

An NYPD spokesperson confirmed the readiness of officers to clean the encampment but stated they hadn’t received official approval yet.

The encampment runs from 34th Street to 46th Street along 11th Avenue, close to landmarks like the Intrepid Museum and Javits Center, raising concerns about impacts on tourism. Karen, a tourist from Belgium, expressed disappointment over the government’s perceived lack of support for homeless individuals.

Mamdani, who emphasized housing assistance in his mayoral campaign, promised to expand housing vouchers. However, an appeal was filed against a court order mandating the expansion so it could be financially sustainable in the medium and long term.

Joan commented on the city’s wealth and emphasized willingness to pay more taxes to provide shelter, food, and training for the homeless.
