Vice President JD Vance recently shared his observations about California during a discussion with podcast host Joe Rogan. Vance compared some areas of California under Governor Gavin Newsom’s leadership to conditions in a ‘Third World country.’ This comment arose after his experience of traveling through a challenging neighborhood in Los Angeles en route to a high-end Christmas party. He remarked that the dramatic contrast between wealth and poverty reminded him of the U.S. Embassy in Port-au-Prince, Haiti.

Vance expressed his ongoing disappointment in California’s decline, especially since his wife, Usha, is from Southern California. He noted the heartbreak stemming from witnessing the state of Los Angeles, once recognized as a quintessential American city known for its architecture and weather. However, sections like Skid Row now prompt him to question city and state governance.

Joe Rogan, who formerly resided in California, revealed his frustrations over the issues that spurred him to relocate. He acknowledged that several individuals in California wish to move but face challenges selling their properties. Rogan criticized Governor Newsom for allegedly misleading residents by emphasizing the state’s economic rankings while overlooking growing local issues.

In the conversation, Vance humorously suggested that one can gauge a state’s condition by comparing the cost of a U-Haul truck rental leaving versus entering the state. Rogan reflected fondly on his past in California, noting how political circumstances altered its appeal. He cited the growth of Skid Row, known for homelessness and crime, as evidence of the state’s troubles.
