Severe Flooding in Texas Leads to Rescues and Destruction

Central Texas faced severe flash flooding after heavy rain, prompting dramatic rescues of individuals stranded by the rising waters. Authorities, including Texas Game Wardens, rescued over 40 people from flooded homes and submerged vehicles. One rescue involved helping a family with a child from their water-surrounded home.

Governor Greg Abbott reported at least one fatality due to the widespread flooding. In Uvalde, local police advised residents near the Leona River to evacuate to higher ground, warning of a potential 20-foot water surge into the city.

Massive Rainfall Hits Texas Communities

Since Monday, over a foot of rain has fallen, with some areas experiencing rainfall rates of up to 3 inches per hour. This deluge overflowed roads and submerged cars, significantly impacting daily life. Ryan Whaley from Boerne described the water as “bad,” leading to urgent actions by game wardens and local fire departments, like the rescue of a woman from the floodwaters.

The Medina River, typically only ankle-deep, rose rapidly, partly due to runoff from creeks and springs. The force of the water was so strong it swept away a group of deer down a flooded creek.

Historical Levels of Flooding and Storm Impact

Chris Shadrock, Boerne’s director of communications, emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating flood levels unmatched since 2015. Predictions indicate that within days, the region might accumulate rain equivalent to six months’ average.

The storm system not only caused flooding but also spawned a tornado near San Antonio. This tornado led to power transformer explosions along a highway and inflicted wind damage, including tearing the roof from an apartment building. Wind speeds reached a destructive 100 mph, further highlighting the storm’s intensity and impact.
