Family Seeks Answers in Teen’s Death After Mississippi Boat Trip

The family of Nolan Wells, an 18-year-old Black teenager found dead after going missing off the Mississippi coast, is collaborating with local prosecutors to thoroughly examine the contents of his cellphone. Wells disappeared during a trip to Horn Island with friends and was reported missing by his mother, Christine Wonsley. Rescuers located his body near the island the following day.

Wells’ phone was retrieved from the home of a friend after the family used a locator app. They allege that messages on the device seemed to have been erased before its return, raising concerns about the circumstances surrounding his death. The Jackson County Sheriff’s Department has stated that no foul play is suspected, yet they have urged the public to provide more information. The results of the official autopsy are still awaited.

Amid calls for transparency, Wells’ family has enlisted trial lawyer and civil rights advocate Ben Crump, known for representing families in significant racially charged cases. Based on photos and videos from the July 4 celebration on the island, where nearly 200 individuals had convened, Wells was one of the few Black individuals in attendance.

Family members and attorneys met with District Attorney Angel Myers McIlrath to discuss the investigation process. Crump mentioned that McIlrath pledged to present the case to a grand jury upon completion. He expressed hopes for a fair and impartial investigation, stressing the importance of evaluating all roles and evidence due to the lived experiences of Black people in America.

Christine Wonsley announced Nolan Wells’ funeral will be held on July 20 through a Facebook post, emphasizing the presence of security and requesting attendees remain peaceful throughout the service.
