Conservative influencer Nick Shirley has publicly denied a viral rumor suggesting he is related to Tyler Robinson, who is charged with the murder of Charlie Kirk. Shirley addressed the claim by posting his family tree online to disprove the reports.
The rumor circulated on social media platform X, alleging that Shirley and Robinson are cousins, even suggesting that Robinson’s mother is Shirley’s aunt. The post also implied that Vice President JD Vance and figures from Trump’s administration promoted Shirley after Kirk’s assassination.
Shirley, known for his investigative reporting on alleged daycare fraud in Minnesota, dismissed the claim as unfounded. He stated, “This is completely false. Here is my family tree for proof,” while tagging Community Notes. His family tree traces his maternal lineage through the Crowley family, excluding Robinson or any relatives linked to him.
A label from Community Notes was later added to the initial post, highlighting the contradiction with Shirley’s statements. Additional comments from the original poster revealed that the information stemmed from Grok, an AI chatbot developed by Elon Musk’s company, xAI.
Tracing back the rumor, Grok’s response circulated via screenshots and replies on X. A verified reply from Grok suggested Utah genealogy records and shared family details implied Robinson and Shirley were related as half first cousins through their mothers, namely Amber Jones Robinson and Brooke T. Jones or Shirley. However, these names did not correlate with Shirley’s family tree.
In a separate communication, Grok provided a different answer, asserting no verified evidence exists linking Shirley and Robinson as relatives. Grok noted that half-cousin claims stem from overlapping names in Utah and speculations rather than confirmed facts.
Shirley previously mentioned on the PBD Podcast that he was the last guest to appear on Kirk’s show prior to Kirk’s fatal shooting in Orem, Utah, on September 10. Shirley disclosed to podcast host Patrick Bet-David that Kirk had texted him the night before, inviting him to the show.
Robinson, aged 22, faces charges for Kirk’s murder, with his preliminary hearing recently concluded. Utah Governor Spencer Cox stated Robinson’s family portrayed him as increasingly political over recent years and critical of Kirk.
The erroneous cousin claim contributes to the misinformation pattern following the Kirk shooting since September, when multiple false claims emerged regarding Robinson’s identity, political stance, and background post-arrest.
