Bill Maher Criticizes Celebrity Disconnect During COVID-19

Bill Maher, the talk show host, took aim at celebrities for being disconnected from the realities faced by everyday people during the COVID-19 pandemic. On his Club Random podcast, Maher discussed this issue with media mogul Byron Allen. They both expressed a preference for living in houses over apartments, especially during the pandemic.

Byron Allen noted that many New Yorkers chose to leave the city for places like Aspen or the Hamptons when the pandemic hit. Maher cited this behavior as evidence of the mismatch between wealthy liberal rhetoric and their actions during the pandemic.

“You know, that’s one of my big bugaboos about COVID, and the people who attack me about COVID, is that the bulls— of, every time I turned on the TV, it was some version of, ‘We’re all in it together,’” he recalled.

Maher expressed frustration over the perceived hypocrisy of celebrities claiming solidarity while living vastly different lives from the average American.

This disconnect was highlighted when celebrities like Gal Gadot, Will Ferrell, Mark Ruffalo, Pedro Pascal and Natalie Portman sang John Lennon’s Imagine, portraying a utopian vision amid the pandemic’s hardships. Criticized as tone-deaf, the video reflected celebrity obliviousness to the suffering caused by the pandemic.

During this period, delivery services surged as people shunned public spaces. Maher sarcastically suggested that if society were truly united, celebrities could take turns delivering food via services like Grubhub.

Years later, Gal Gadot admitted the video was “in poor taste.” Maher’s comments spark important questions about celebrity activism and its relevance in times of crisis.
