Conor McGregor, at 38 years old, faces a significant challenge after sustaining a severe knee injury in his fight against Max Holloway at UFC 329. Following this setback, McGregor has used social media to declare his intent to return to the Octagon. He plans to undergo surgery to repair his right knee and fulfill the last bout of his UFC contract.
This final fight could mark McGregor’s farewell. If he retires, numerous fighters are eager for the opportunity to face him in his last appearance. Among possible opponents like Holloway, Michael Chandler, Nate Diaz, Justin Gaethje, and Ilia Topuria, one name stands out: Dustin Poirier.
Dustin Poirier, currently 37, retired after securing the “BMF” championship in his fight with Holloway at UFC 318. However, the possibility of a fourth encounter with McGregor intrigues him enough to consider returning to the ring. In an interview with MMA Junkie, Poirier expressed his willingness to face McGregor again. “Whenever he is healed up, hit me up, Conor,” Poirier stated. “I’ll come back and whip you again. I’d come back to whip him again — at 170.”
Their rivalry is storied, with three previous matchups between them. McGregor claimed victory in their first bout at UFC 178 in 2014 with a first-round TKO. Poirier emerged triumphant in the following two fights, both by TKO. In their latest clash, McGregor suffered a broken left leg at the end of the first round. Poirier’s performance not only secured victories but also elevated his standing in the lightweight division.
