E. Jean Carroll Receives Damages in Lawsuit Against Trump

Author E. Jean Carroll has successfully received over $5.6 million from a verdict in her lawsuit against Donald Trump. The payment includes a $5 million jury award and accrued interest. This amount was released from an escrow account on a Monday, based on court documents. Carroll’s legal representative, Roberta Kaplan, confirmed this on Tuesday.

Kaplan stated, “We are pleased to report that she has received the damages payment.” Trump’s legal team continues to pursue appeals.

After the jury’s decision against Trump, he placed the awarded money in escrow. The U.S. Supreme Court allowed the civil verdict to remain, which led Judge Lewis A. Kaplan to authorize the money’s release. Trump’s attorneys attempted to prevent the payment, but their request was rejected without conditions on Carroll’s use of the funds.

Carroll plans to save the money in a retirement fund. Trump’s legal team is appealing again to stop or overturn the payment.

The jury concluded Trump assaulted Carroll in a New York department store dressing room in 1996 and later defamed her when she recounted the incident in her 2019 memoir. Trump continues to deny the allegations and dismissed a photograph taken with Carroll in 1987 as unimportant. He accused her of fabricating the story to promote book sales.

Despite Trump’s non-attendance at the trial, Carroll testified that their seemingly friendly encounter in the store turned into an assault. The legal proceedings became possible after New York adjusted its laws, allowing past sexual abuse cases to be addressed.

In addition, Trump faces an $83 million defamation ruling related to a separate trial where he made a brief appearance. Carroll’s legal actions continue as she navigates these complex cases against the former president.
