Attorneys representing President Donald Trump attempted to prevent the disbursement of funds to writer E. Jean Carroll. Despite these efforts, Carroll successfully collected her $5 million judgment, stemming from a jury’s decision over three years ago that found Trump liable for sexually abusing and defaming her.
On September 6, 2024, E. Jean Carroll exited the New York Federal Court after the judgment amount was disbursed from a court escrow account. The total sum received by Carroll’s legal team amounted to $5,625,005.48, inclusive of interest, according to court records.
The legal dispute originated from a 2022 lawsuit filed by Carroll in New York. She alleged that Trump sexually assaulted her in the dressing room of a Manhattan department store following a chance meeting in 1996. Carroll further claimed defamation after she publicly disclosed her allegations in 2019.
President Trump continues to assert that he does not know Carroll and denies any misconduct. NBC News has reached out to attorneys representing both Carroll and Trump for their comments on the matter.
