Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool Closure Dampens Tourist Experience

Visitors to the National Mall in Washington on Monday faced disappointment as the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool was partially drained. Sections of the area were fenced off, obscuring the view of one of the city’s iconic attractions. This closure is part of an ongoing renovation project marked by controversy, maintenance challenges, and disputes over the cause of damage to the historic pool.

The current work follows a problematic renovation aimed at preparing the pool for the nation’s 250th-anniversary celebrations on the Fourth of July. Officials indicated that draining the pool is necessary to clear debris from Independence Day fireworks, inspect the pool’s new liner, and address persistent maintenance issues.

Controversy arises from claims that vandals damaged the newly installed liner, described by former President Donald Trump as having a significant “gash.” Authorities have charged several individuals with alleged damage to the site, though at least one has denied any wrongdoing. This has become a focal point in the ongoing debate about the multimillion-dollar refurbishment, which included adding a dark blue coating to the century-old pool.

Tourist visits to Washington are heavy during summer. The Lincoln Memorial is a key destination on the National Mall, attracting around 8.5 million visitors in 2024, while the entire city hosted over 27 million visitors last year. Closure of key landmarks is especially noticed as tourists seek to enjoy the iconic sites.

Visitors expressed dissatisfaction over the closure. A man from Reno, Nevada, remarked that the sight was “totally ruined.” Having lived in the area before, he fondly recalled walking by the pool. Landon Miller, also from Reno, visited Washington for the first time. He described the situation as ironic and commented on the pool’s status as a reflection of current politics in the U.S.

Another visitor, from Charleston, South Carolina, wished his children could experience the pool’s historical beauty. A local, Paul Zeisset, noted that the fencing seemed unnatural and lamented the renovation project’s lack of visible results.

Since the renovations, the pool has encountered several issues. Algae growth and peeling sections were reported shortly after its refilling in June. According to court documents, damage to the liner, noted on June 9, has been blamed by the Trump administration on vandalism, with critics questioning whether renovation flaws may also be a factor.
