Denmark Stands Firm Against U.S. Control of Greenland

Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen of Denmark has firmly stated that her nation will protect every part of its territory. She emphasized that Greenland, a semi-autonomous region, is not for sale.

During the NATO summit held in Ankara, Turkey, Ms. Frederiksen addressed reporters, asserting Denmark’s readiness to defend both its territory and NATO’s collective regions. Her remarks came after President Trump reiterated his desire for the United States to have control over Greenland.

President Trump voiced his frustrations with NATO, claiming the strategic importance of Greenland for global protection, not only for the U.S. He highlighted its minimal benefit to Denmark.

Earlier in the year, Trump hinted at potentially using military force to take control of Greenland. Denmark’s response included preparing plans to destroy airfields in Greenland should an American invasion occur. Frederiksen openly questioned the future of U.S.-Denmark alliances.

Although President Trump has toned down his aggressive stance in recent months, the U.S. has sought more influence through negotiations. This includes requests for additional military bases in Greenland, increased consulate presence in Nuuk, and greater control over major investment deals.

Denmark and Greenland’s response to U.S. pressure appears to have strengthened their alliance, presenting a united front. Frederiksen stressed the importance of respecting Denmark’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

International support has been strong. The European Union backed Denmark and Greenland, stressing that decisions concerning Greenland should be made by its inhabitants and Denmark.

EU spokesperson Olof Gill emphasized the principles of territorial integrity, national sovereignty, and the importance of international law.
