Tommy Egan’s Remarkable Journey with Troy University Baseball

Tommy Egan, a Mount Carmel alumnus, experienced an incredible journey while playing for Troy University. In his fifth college baseball season and fourth institution, Egan found himself as the starting pitcher for Game 2 of the Trojans’ super regional against Little Rock. The stakes were high, with the team vying for their first-ever College World Series appearance.

Egan expressed his excitement about pitching in the super regional. “The adrenaline was unmatched. More intense than even in Omaha,” Egan shared. Fans filled the stadium, standing on the football stands to witness this defining moment. Egan capitalized on the opportunity, delivering a stellar performance.

Egan struck out eight batters over 7 1/3 innings, conceding two earned runs from five hits. This contributed to a 7-2 victory, propelling coach Skylar Meade and the Trojans to the College World Series in Omaha for the first time. Egan attributed his motivation to his coach. “Helping Troy succeed was crucial,” he said. “Skylar genuinely cares for us. We wanted to win for him.”

Egan’s historic win occurred on June 6, the same day Mount Carmel triumphed over Brother Rice 11-1, winning a Class 4A sectional title.

Egan’s father, Mark, an assistant for the Caravan, traveled to Troy to watch Tommy, while Mount Carmel coach Brian Hurry hurried from a game to watch Egan’s performance on TV. Hurry later attended the College World Series in Omaha to support him in person.

Despite the Trojans going 1-2 in Omaha, Egan contributed to their victory against Ole Miss with a 12-8 win, although they faced losses against West Virginia.

Reflecting on the experience in Omaha, Egan described it as surreal. “Being there was incredible,” he commented. “We questioned how we made it but couldn’t be upset playing there.”

Egan concluded the season with a 6-5 record, a 5.46 ERA, and 101 strikeouts over 89 innings. Despite a calf injury affecting his performance, he remained committed.

Egan’s collegiate path included stints at Iowa Western, Houston, and Illinois-Chicago. He now awaits potential professional opportunities, but this unforgettable year stands out. “I embraced playing, regardless of it being the final season,” Egan said. “Reaching Omaha justified all efforts.”
