FIFA Overturns Suspension of US Soccer Star as Belgium Plans Appeal

FIFA has lifted the suspension of Team USA soccer player Folarin Balogun, allowing him to participate in a crucial match against Belgium. This decision has prompted Belgium to consider an appeal, introducing further uncertainty as the game approaches.

Reports indicate that FIFA had issued suspensions to two key members of the U.S. Soccer Federation before Monday’s World Cup match with Belgium. ESPN identified team manager Sam Zapatka and U.S. Soccer Federation Vice President of Security Frank Pannell as those barred from attending. The U.S. suffered a 4-1 defeat to Belgium, ending its journey in the 2026 World Cup.

The reasons for the suspensions were not disclosed by FIFA. However, sources told ESPN that these were likely related to an incident during the U.S. victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina in the Round of 32. Alleged violations involved FIFA match protocols and the unauthorized entry into restricted areas by team members, though no physical confrontations were reported.

Zapatka, who joined the U.S. Soccer Federation in 2015, became team administrative manager in 2020. On Tuesday, U.S. Soccer emphasized that the suspensions had no relation to the appeal regarding Balogun’s red-card suspension.

Belgium challenged FIFA’s decision to lift Balogun’s suspension, but the governing body upheld its ruling, allowing the forward to play. In response to the controversy, former President Donald Trump commented on the incident, indicating that he had discussed the red card with FIFA President Gianni Infantino, stating he believed the play was not a foul.

As Belgium advanced to the quarterfinals by defeating the U.S., they are set to face Spain on Friday at Los Angeles Stadium.
