The U.S. suffered a 4-1 loss to Belgium, ending its World Cup journey. Post-game, Balogun approached Belgium’s manager, Rudi Garcia, who appreciated the gesture. “He came to talk to me. I really liked that. It is not his fault; he is not the one to blame, and that’s what I told him,” Garcia said.
The Athletic highlighted FIFA’s disciplinary code, which allows for suspension of disciplinary measures. If a new violation occurs during the probationary period, the suspension is lifted and the penalty enforced.
Former President Donald Trump admitted to contacting FIFA President Gianni Infantino regarding Balogun’s card. “All I did was, I asked for a review, because I didn’t think it was a foul,” Trump said. Trump emphasized the need for top players in crucial matches, stating the decision to lift the red card was correct.
Despite this intervention, Belgium advanced to face Spain, while the U.S. hopes for better results in 2032.
