Millions gathered in Iran’s capital to say goodbye to Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who died in the conflict with the United States and Israel. The streets were filled with mourners carrying signs demanding retribution for the former supreme leader’s death.
People thronged around a truck bearing the ayatollah’s coffin as it made its way slowly through crowded Tehran streets. Posters depicted Ayatollah Khamenei alongside a clenched fist. Many mourners held images of President Trump and Vice President JD Vance with crosshairs superimposed, with slogans like ‘There will be blood.’
Amid soaring temperatures exceeding 90 degrees, Iranian officers sprayed water to cool the flag-waving attendees. The government orchestrated the week-long funeral meticulously. The ceremonies aimed to honor Khamenei, who ruled Iran for more than 37 years, enforced strict policies, and expanded anti-Western sentiment.
Khamenei’s leadership ended on February 28, the day of his death at the start of the U.S.-Israeli attack. The United States and Iran now hold a fragile cease-fire. However, discussions on sustained peace will not resume until after the ceremonies conclude.
