The missile, which carried a dummy warhead, was fired by an unspecified Chinese navy submarine at 12:01 p.m. Beijing time. It landed successfully in the designated sea area, according to the report.
The announcement followed statements from officials in Australia and New Zealand. They confirmed they had received notification regarding an upcoming Chinese missile test in the South Pacific.
This event marks the second instance of such a missile test since September 2024. At that time, China’s Rocket Force launched an intercontinental ballistic missile into the same waters.
Xinhua characterized the missile test as part of China’s annual military training regimen. The report emphasized that relevant countries were informed in advance.
