Minions Lead July Fourth Box Office, Narrowly Beating Toy Story 5

Over the July Fourth weekend, Minions & Monsters edged out Toy Story 5 at the box office, although the margin was slim. The latest entry in the Despicable Me series achieved $36.4 million in earnings. Meanwhile, Toy Story 5, which had previously exceeded Supergirl, pulled in $31 million according to studio estimates for North America.

The Minions film, featuring the mischievous characters during Hollywood’s Golden Age, debuted on Wednesday and reached $61.4 million over its first five days. With a strong global following, Minions & Monsters accumulated $160 million worldwide during its initial week.

For viewers seeking patriotic themes during the U.S.’s 250th birthday celebration, Young Washington offered an alternative. This film, presenting George Washington’s role in the French and Indian War, secured third place with $21 million. Conversely, Supergirl experienced a significant drop, earning just under $10 million, which represented a 74% decline from its lackluster opening weekend.

The overall weekend box office saw a decrease of 24% compared to the previous year, based on Rentrak figures. Despite the decline, this summer’s performance has risen by nearly 12% since 2025, partially due to the success of low-budget Gen-Z favorites like Obsession and Backrooms, which placed sixth and seventh, following Steven Spielberg’s Disclosure Day.
