Rebuilding Life After a Tragic Acid Attack

Nafiah Ikram faced a life-altering attack five years ago when a stranger threw acid in her face near her home. Since then, she has been on a difficult journey to rebuild her life and identity.

In March 2021, the then 27-year-old was targeted in an acid attack as she approached her residence. The assault left her with severe burns that required numerous surgeries. Ikram’s reflections on this event reveal both her struggles and her determination.

Recently, Ikram visited a Long Island salon for her regular appointment, dressed in a pink and white jogger suit with matching headphones. She viewed these visits as part of her effort to regain a sense of normalcy. In her words, she fights against what she has at times seen as a “monster” in the mirror due to her changed appearance.

Before the attack, Ikram described herself as a “girly girl” who loved makeup and dressing up. Those elements of her personality continue to persist, albeit altered by her experience. She recounts the moment when her life changed at the hands of someone clad in a hoodie who attacked her after her workday at CVS Pharmacy.

The police in Nassau County have been involved in the investigation, yet the identity of the assailant remains unknown. Despite these challenges, Ikram persists in navigating life with strength, seeking moments of self-acceptance and peace.
