Atlanta Dream Faces Officiating Concerns After Loss to Washington Mystics

The Atlanta Dream endured an 81-76 defeat against the Washington Mystics, marking an unexpected setback. Jordin Canada of the Dream expressed frustration with the officiating during Thursday night’s game.

I’m going to get fined, but I don’t care. Tonight, the officiating was awful. I don’t know how many times Angel [Reese] has to get beat up in the paint for her to get a foul called. I thought all 3 refs were terrible, Canada stated in her postgame interview.

Rhyne Howard led the Dream with 24 points, while Canada contributed 10 points and seven assists. Angel Reese added 13 points and 13 rebounds. Both Reese and Canada finished the game with five personal fouls, complicating their team’s strategy.

Referee statistics showed 23 fouls were called against the Mystics and 22 against the Dream. The Dream attempted 18 free throws versus the Mystics’ 19, which implied balanced officiating. However, Canada argued missed calls on Reese’s fouls.

Canada further elaborated, Every time [Angel] was getting a fastbreak layup, she was getting hacked. In the paint, she was getting hacked, no foul calls.

She continued, Anytime we tried to play physical, it was always a foul call. So I think the officiating has to be better. The comments followed increased scrutiny of WNBA referees, added to by Atlanta Dream coach Karl Smesko’s remarks on Reese’s perceived lack of respect from officials.

Present statistics from Statmuse report the Dream receiving 385 fouls this season across 20 games, marking the 10th highest in the league. The Connecticut Sun tops the list with 465, followed closely by Portland Fire and Indiana Fever.

A Phoenix Mercury incident put further spotlight on refereeing, involving Alyssa Thomas and Caitlin Clark from Indiana Fever. Thomas received a Flagrant Foul 2 and faced a one-game suspension upon league review.
