Daredevil Couple Faces Charges for Empire State Building Climb

1 month ago 0

In New York, a couple’s daredevil stunt of climbing the Empire State Building’s antenna has led to charges of felony reckless endangerment, burglary, and other offenses. The couple, known as Angela Nikolau and Ivan Beerkus, appeared in court and faced the media with minimal commentary. Beerkus did emphasize their belief in love when asked about the risky endeavor.

Authorities reported that the pair, featured in the 2024 Netflix documentary titled ‘Skywalkers: A Love Story,’ added danger to their spectacle by scaling the landmark’s broadcast antenna. Once at the peak of 1,454 feet (443 meters) above Manhattan, they displayed a banner with the message, ‘When the power of love beats the love of power the world knows peace.’ Afterward, they descended to a lower ledge for a marriage proposal. Nikolau later shared images from their adventure on social media, including a snapshot featuring an engagement ring and the view of Manhattan.

The police waited for the antenna to be powered down before ascending to intercept the climbers. Officers climbed approximately 1,250 feet (381 meters) to intercept them. The court document officially identified the climbers as Angelina Nikolau and Ivan Kuznetsov. Their documentary captures the duo’s unauthorized climbs, often involving creative strategies like posing as construction workers. During their latest escapade, police discovered a broken lock on a security door leading to the building’s antenna, highlighting restricted access to the 104th floor.

The Empire State Building management labeled the climbing attempt as unauthorized. They have not yet addressed potential interactions between the stunt-loving couple and security personnel. Typically, visitors to the building are subject to screenings and limitations on items such as large packages or costumes.

Beerkus and Nikolau have been released without bail in alignment with New York’s bail regulations. Their attorney, Jason Krinsky, indicated they will review evidence from prosecutors upon receipt to determine future actions. Krinsky remarked on the unique nature of the proposal, suggesting a degree of admiration for the personal significance it held.

Although unauthorized climbs are not uncommon at the Empire State Building, they rarely receive permission. An exception was made for actor and musician Jared Leto in 2023 to aid a promotional event.
