Trump Defends Family Business Amid Conflict of Interest Allegations

1 month ago 0

President Donald Trump recently defended his family’s business activities. He argued that the power of the presidency magnifies allegations of conflicts of interest related to his children. In an interview with CNBC’s Joe Kernen, Trump expressed sympathy for his children. He noted that nearly any business decision they make faces scrutiny due to his position. I feel badly for my kids. Anything they do … because the presidency is so powerful, so big, you have a conflict of interest. Almost anything they do, there’s a conflict of interest, Trump stated.

The timing of his comments coincides with increased attention on the Trump family’s business dealings. This follows the president’s latest financial disclosure report, which highlighted $1.4 billion in 2025 income from ventures like cryptocurrency. Newsweek reached out to the Trump Organization for comment.

Rejecting Accusations of Personal Gain

During the same interview, Trump dismissed accusations of using the presidency for personal financial benefit. Kernen asked how he responds to critics accusing him of enriching his family through his role. Trump explained he has distanced himself from business management. I don’t do anything having to do with my business. My kids run it, he said. He emphasized that his children face challenges since federal decisions can impact almost all economic sectors. Simple business decisions like buying a truck could bring conflict-of-interest questions. He advised his children to avoid controversy but acknowledged they have independent careers.

Intensifying Scrutiny During Second Term

Since his return to office, questions about the Trump family’s business have intensified. Critics focus on their ventures in cryptocurrency, foreign real estate, and private investments. Trump’s recent financial disclosure showing significant crypto income attracted particular attention. The report showed major earnings tied to World Liberty Financial and similar interests.

Supporters argue that Trump met legal ethics requirements. Federal law doesn’t mandate presidential divestment of personal assets. Trump reinforced this point, stating the family’s activities are lawful. Ethics groups like CREW and some Democratic officials challenge this view, claiming expanding business interests create real or perceived conflicts.

Recent criticism came from Warren, the leading Democrat on the Senate banking committee. She accused Trump of brazen crypto corruption after disclosures cited over $1 billion in crypto gains since Trump’s return. Warren insists on legislative changes to prevent government families from benefitting from the crypto sector. She voiced these concerns in a May 2025 letter urging divestment from World Liberty Financial.

Business Ventures of Trump’s Children

Trump’s children blend politics and business uniquely. During the first administration, Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner served as senior advisers but stepped away after 2021. Meanwhile, Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump continued leading the Trump Organization. Their roles expanded into new areas such as cryptocurrency, venture capital, and consumer products. Eric leads real estate projects, while Donald Jr. maintains a public profile and diverse investments.

Highlight ventures include co-founding World Liberty Financial and launching American Bitcoin in March 2025. The latter is a cryptocurrency mining firm. Investments through 1789 Capital, Donald Jr.’s partnership in defense and AI industries, have also grown. They expanded international licensing agreements in numerous countries.

Forbes reported a significant increase in Donald Jr.’s net worth. It rose from $50 million to $300 million from late 2024 to the end of 2025.

Ongoing Debate

Trump’s latest remarks may not end debates over public office’s separation from private business interests. Opponents, including ethics watchdogs, have raised ongoing concerns about potential conflicts with Trump-branded businesses. However, both the White House and Trump Organization assert that necessary safeguards exist.

For Trump, the scrutiny poses personal and political challenges. He attributes it to occupying a powerful office, arguing that it makes almost anything his family does open to public examination.
