Two weeks ago, Tyler Adams, a midfielder for the United States men’s national soccer team, spoke on FS1’s “First Things First.” He highlighted Malik Tillman as an overlooked yet vital player for the USMNT at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Adams appreciated Tillman’s ability to create numerous opportunities, describing him as essential to the team. Tillman competes at the highest level in the Champions League and the Bundesliga.
Tillman’s performance at the World Cup has now grabbed the attention of U.S. soccer fans. On July 1, in the Round of 32 match against Bosnia and Herzegovina, Tillman scored a remarkable free kick goal, securing a 2-0 victory for the USMNT. This marked his first World Cup goal, drawing comparisons to Landon Donovan’s memorable goal against Algeria in the 2010 World Cup as one of the greatest in USMNT history. Despite sustaining an injury during the match, Tillman remained unfazed and showed his resilience by quickly changing cleats before the decisive kick. “Someone stepped on me, but yeah, it’s just pain, I guess,” he remarked.
Tillman now faces greater responsibility in creating opportunities for the USMNT’s upcoming Round-of-16 match against Belgium on July 6. This is because breakout star striker Folarin Balogun, who scored in the first half, received a controversial red card in the 64th minute for a challenge on Bosnia’s Tarik Muharemovic. According to FIFA’s World Cup regulations, Balogun’s red card is not subject to appeal, as noted by sports journalist Tom Bogert, meaning he won’t play against Belgium.
This presents a challenge for the USMNT, as Balogun is the team’s top scorer in the tournament with three goals. Nonetheless, four other players have scored, and key figures like Christian Pulisic and Weston McKennie have constantly threatened to add more to the tally. Overcoming Belgium could solidify this squad’s legacy in U.S. soccer by reaching the World Cup quarterfinals for the first time since 2002. The USMNT’s only finish above the quarterfinals came in the inaugural 1930 World Cup.
