Stephen Vitale, CEO, and Rocco Vitale, President of Pyrotecnico, have shared details about their meticulous planning for the July 4th fireworks show in Washington, D.C. This spectacular event, celebrating America’s 250th anniversary, involved a preparation period of six months, a team of 75 people, and the logistical challenge of setting off 850,000 fireworks shells across multiple land and barge locations. The event, aiming to be a grand display of patriotism, expects to attract over a million people to the National Mall.
The event’s security is a top priority, given the large expected crowd. Agencies have been coordinating for weeks, if not months, to ensure public safety. Jason Pack, a retired FBI supervisory special agent, highlighted the importance of a whole-of-government approach to security to avoid overlooking potential threats.
While no specific threats have been identified, heightened security measures are in place across Washington, D.C., and other cities to protect attendees. The emphasis on security is crucial, especially in light of past incidents at public celebrations. For example, in Highland Park, Illinois, a mass shooting during a July Fourth parade in 2022 resulted in the tragic loss of seven lives and injuries to 48 others.
Paul Mauro, a former NYPD Legal Bureau Commanding Officer, stressed the need for cooperation between local law enforcement and larger agencies like the FBI and Homeland Security. He advised small cities to reach out to these agencies to prevent possible tragedies.
Vehicle-ramming attacks also pose a risk at major events, as seen in the 2017 New York City Halloween parade attack. Sayfullo Saipov carried out a truck attack that resulted in eight deaths. Mauro mentioned that by anticipating such threats, security agencies set up physical barriers, reducing the potential severity of the attack.
Federal and local agencies collaborate through fusion centers to manage threat-related information. These centers are pivotal in sharing intelligence between federal, state, and local partners.
Public awareness also contributes to safety. Authorities urge the public to report any suspicious activity to the FBI or local law enforcement immediately.
