Dave Portnoy Considers Mayoral Run Against Zohran Mamdani in New York City

Dave Portnoy, known for founding Barstool Sports, expressed interest in running against NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani in a recent interview. Mamdani, 34, elected as the city’s first Muslim and South Asian mayor, has gained support among voters but faced criticism from figures like Donald Trump, who consider his politics extreme.

In his conversation with Fox News’ Jesse Watters, Portnoy stated, “I always thought I’d never get involved in politics,” but admitted spending significant time “losing my mind on what’s happening right now, especially in New York.” When questioned about competing with Mamdani, Portnoy responded, “I would love to,” while acknowledging uncertainty about his chances, “Can I win here? I have no idea.” Newsweek reached out to Mamdani’s office for comment.

Portnoy, also renowned for his pizza reviews and promoting his memoir, Cancel Me If You Can, boasts a following in NYC. Highlighting his contributions like the Barstool Fund, he remarked, “I’ve done a lot of good in New York City.” Criticizing politicians, Portnoy said, “I’ve had a real job. Unlike these clown politicians who have never been in the real world.” A segment from his interview on X gained over 5 million views.

He has been persistently critical of Mamdani. On June 26, Portnoy wrote, “Give Mamdani credit. He is turning New York into a socialist/communist anti-American city by getting ‘politicians’ like Darializa Avila Chevalier elected.” Chevalier, a democratic socialist, defeated Representative Adriano Espaillat in a recent primary.

Mamdani’s rise is seen by some on the left as a beacon for progressive politics. Bernie Sanders stated, “Mamdani’s victory will inspire change across our country.” Conversely, conservatives like House Speaker Mike Johnson voiced caution, saying, “There are MINI MAMDANIs popping up all around the country. We are in a fight RIGHT NOW to save the Republic.”

Portnoy’s potential party affiliation remains unknown, although he previously supported Trump. His comments sparked online debate. Celebrities entering politics have increased, highlighted by Trump’s transition from businessman to politician and Kanye West’s brief presidential campaign. Spencer Pratt also pursued a political role as mayor of Los Angeles.

These trends have influenced perceptions of political capability. Hemant Mehta, an author and activist, criticized this, attributing it to Trump. Polling expert Nate Lichtman sarcastically compared managing NYC to blogging about pizza. Democratic strategist Mike Nellis offered skepticism over Portnoy’s candidacy, noting New Yorkers’ potential reluctance to elect him.

The next NYC mayoral election is set for 2029, allowing time before Portnoy’s aspirations could materialize.
