Nun Released After Detention Near U.S.-Mexico Border

In McAllen, Texas, a nun was released from immigration custody after her arrest while walking to Mass dressed in her religious habit. Sister Leticia Ugboaja was on her way to Our Lady of Sorrows Church, located a few miles from the U.S.-Mexico border, when officers from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detained her.

The Department of Homeland Security and ICE have not commented on the incident since it occurred. However, the arrest drew significant attention after parish officials took to social media. This led to intervention from Congress members, including U.S. Rep. Monica de la Cruz, who advocated on Sister Ugboaja’s behalf.

Sister Ugboaja belongs to the Daughters of Mary Mother of Mercy and serves as an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion at the church, according to Brenda Riojas, a spokesperson for the Diocese of Brownsville. Additionally, she is a registered nurse at South Texas Health System and has a decade of experience as a certified nursing assistant at DHR Health in Edinburg, Texas.

Members of Congress representing the South Texas region engaged with federal officials, ensuring her release from custody by Monday. “We are grateful for the quick response of local representatives who reached out to the Department of Homeland Security to get her released from custody,” Riojas stated.

The event reflects broader concerns tied to immigration policies implemented during President Donald Trump’s administration. Measures have impacted sensitive locations like houses of worship, prompting faith leaders to adjust their responses. They have encouraged online services and offered assistance, such as running errands, for congregants fearful of leaving their homes.
