Fetterman Raises Concerns Over Defiance of Supreme Court Ruling

Senator John Fetterman, a Democrat from Pennsylvania, has voiced criticism within the Democratic Party regarding New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s refusal to comply with a Supreme Court decision. Fetterman has called out his fellow party members for lacking a formal condemnation of Mamdani’s stance, arguing that such defiance poses a threat to democratic integrity.

Fetterman’s remarks come in light of a recent Supreme Court ruling that upheld President Donald Trump’s authority to terminate Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for certain migrants. On the program ‘Saturday in America,’ Fetterman highlighted previous concerns raised by Democrats regarding constitutional crises during Trump’s administration. However, he noted a discrepancy in responses now that Mamdani openly refuses to honor the court’s decision.

“I haven’t seen the freak-out now that the mayor of New York is saying he’s going to defy the Supreme Court ruling,” said Fetterman to host Kayleigh McEnany.

The senator emphasized the necessity of upholding judicial decisions to prevent a constitutional crisis, particularly when leaders from major cities voice intentions not to comply. His comments followed the Supreme Court’s recent rulings in two noteworthy cases impacting immigration policy.

The first case, Mullin v. Al Otro Lado, determined that migrants turned away at the border before entering the United States are ineligible to apply for asylum. The second case, Mullin v. Doe, concluded that Haitian and Syrian nationals with TPS are barred from obtaining judicial relief to delay the termination of their status by challenging Trump’s revocation efforts.

Mayor Mamdani’s refusal came in a video statement opposing the Supreme Court’s decision, insisting that his administration would never accept it. Fetterman has expressed growing concerns over the rise of far-left politicians like Mamdani within his party, highlighting fears of disconnect between traditional party values and current political movements.

Other progressive figures have led discussions about the Democratic Party’s ideological shift. This includes Graham Planter, a Senate candidate in Maine, Nithya Raman, a Los Angeles mayoral candidate, and Janeese Lewis George, a Washington, D.C. mayoral candidate. Additionally, several progressive candidates in New York City contribute to conversations around this ideological transformation.
