Two sisters and a friend have been charged with murder following the fatal stabbing of a 32-year-old mother of five in Texas. The Del Rio Police Department announced the arrests of Kitty Mia Diaz, 21, Amaya Cookie Diaz, 19, and Kyandra Renee Faz, 21. The attack occurred in broad daylight and the victim, Caroline “Caro” Peña, succumbed to her injuries later that day.
The incident took place in Del Rio, a city near the Mexican border in southwest Texas. Police responded to a report at 2:10 p.m. on Thursday about a woman who had arrived at Val Verde Regional Medical Center with multiple stab wounds. Due to the severity of her injuries, she was transferred to a San Antonio medical facility, where she died later that night.
Zelina Ochoa, a childhood friend of Peña, described her as someone who loved being a mother. She expressed her sorrow, remarking on Peña’s nurturing nature. Another friend, Christina Salinas, shared her regret at missing a call from Peña before the stabbing. She later saw a photo of Peña’s injuries on a community page.
Police stated that the attack happened at a busy intersection. Surveillance video, witness interviews, and collected evidence led to the identification and arrest of the suspects. The Diaz sisters were arrested without incident, followed by Faz shortly after. All three are being held at GEO Correctional Facility awaiting court appearances.
The motive for the attack has not been released, and the investigation remains ongoing. Additional charges may be filed as further evidence is gathered. Peña leaves behind five children, the oldest being a 17-year-old son, and a twin sister.
Ochoa fondly remembered Peña, stating, “If you needed something and she had it, even if it was her last, she’d give it to you.”
