Marine Missing After USS Anchorage Training Exercise

Multiple agencies are conducting a search in San Diego for a U.S. Marine who disappeared during a nighttime training exercise on the USS Anchorage last Thursday. The Navy has transitioned from search and rescue efforts to recovery operations, opting not to reveal the Marine’s identity as the search teams cover an area of approximately 2,400 square miles using military ships and aircraft.

This incident marks the second occurrence within six weeks where the U.S. military has launched extensive search operations for missing personnel. The previous search followed fatal training accidents involving soldiers in Morocco. The current search began around 1:20 a.m. Thursday, and continued for two days before shifting to recovery operations.

No details have been shared about the circumstances surrounding the Marine’s disappearance, and his name has been withheld pending family notification. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and all who are affected during this difficult time,” stated the Navy in an official news release.

Earlier reports by the Associated Press noted the recovery of remains of two Army soldiers who were missing due to off-duty military exercises in Morocco the previous month.
