Ian Somerhalder: From Hollywood to Farming Advocate

Ian Somerhalder, known for roles in Lost and The Vampire Diaries, has shifted away from Hollywood to focus on regenerative farming. The 47-year-old actor is now an advocate for rebuilding soil health and restoring ecosystems.

In an interview with Fox News Digital, Somerhalder talked about how a trip to Zimbabwe influenced his views on agriculture. He saw firsthand how regenerative farming practices can revive degraded lands and reshape ecosystems.

Somerhalder’s journey into this field began when he met Allan Savory, a pioneer in regenerative agriculture. Savory’s invitation to Zimbabwe allowed him to document land restoration efforts.

“That’s how I started understanding regenerative practices,” Somerhalder said. “It can transform barren lands into thriving ecosystems.”

His experiences in Zimbabwe contributed to the documentary Kiss the Ground, which initiated discussions on regenerative agriculture in the U.S.

Somerhalder later executive produced the documentaries Common Ground and Groundswell, exploring the U.S. food system and sustainability practices.

On his career transition, Somerhalder mentioned that he misses the camaraderie of productions but believes the industry has changed significantly.

“I’m glad I made the switch,” Somerhalder noted. “Now, I focus on meaningful projects.”

Today, Somerhalder lives on a farm with his wife, Nikki Reed, and their family. Reed shares his passion, managing many aspects of farm life. Together, they have found a lifestyle that emphasizes sustainability and connection to nature.

The actor sees the future as optimistic, with the next generation connecting more with the earth.

“Despite challenges, the future is bright,” Somerhalder said.
