French TV Host Apologizes After Criticizing Soccer Star’s World Cup Departure

A prominent French television host has issued an apology following criticism of her remarks about a soccer player’s decision. The controversy surrounds Belgium forward Jérémy Doku’s choice to leave the World Cup and be present for the birth of his first child in London.

The incident began after Doku announced his plans to fly to London for the birth of his baby. France Pierron, a French commentator, publicly criticized his decision during a television appearance on “L’Equipe de Choc,” labeling childbirth as “a disgusting moment, excuse me, where the dad is useless.” Her comments quickly faced backlash from various quarters.

On Tuesday, Pierron expressed regret for her comments. “These remarks are solely my own and in no way reflect a collective position,” she posted on X. “I understand that they may have shocked, offended, or hurt some of you, and I am sorry for that.” Her employer, L’Equipe, distanced itself from her comments with an apology to Doku, stating the remarks do not align with its values.

Doku successfully reached London for the birth of his son, Praise. Sharing his gratitude on social media, Doku said, “Shireen and Praise are doing great, and my heart is full of gratitude. Welcoming my son into the world is one of the greatest blessings God has ever given me. Thank you to the team for the support, now it’s time to get back to football and represent my country on the biggest stage.” Belgium captain Youri Tielemans voiced support for Doku, saying, “Having a child is the most beautiful thing in the world, and being there, it’s more than normal as a dad, as a mom, obviously.” Tielemans emphasized the importance of such memories.

Despite missing Belgium’s draw against Iran due to a respiratory illness, Doku was cleared to travel to London. Belgium will face New Zealand on Friday at BC Place, a crucial match for advancing to the knockout round. Belgium played to draws in its first two games.
