Professional golfer Xander Schauffele is eagerly looking forward to a rewarding weekend in New England at the Travelers Championship. Known as a player favorite, this event takes place at TPC River Highlands in Cromwell, Connecticut, following the challenging U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills.
The contrast between these tournaments is stark. The U.S. Open is recognized for its rigorous course conditions, where only three players managed to finish under par. In contrast, the Travelers Championship provides a more accessible playing field, as evidenced by Scottie Scheffler’s 22-under finish two years ago, following a playoff. Remarkably, Jim Furyk once scored a 58 here.
Xander Schauffele, 2022 Travelers Champion
“I didn’t even mind the rain today, to be honest,” Schauffele stated on Tuesday after practice.
Schauffele’s sentiments reflect his relief after Shinnecock Hills, as his +2 score had secured him 11th place. The atmosphere of the Travelers Championship aligns perfectly with the preferences of the two-time major winner.
New course modifications promise challenges, potentially preventing high scores like 2022’s 58, but Schauffele welcomes these changes. He appreciates the tricky spots demanding strategic play:
“There’s plenty of tricky spots where you feel like you’re supposed to pick shots up and sometimes you don’t,” Schauffele explained. “If you can kind of get in the zone, you can shoot seven or eight under.”
Other aspects elevate the Travelers experience beyond the greens. The amenities and gestures toward players make it a standout event in the PGA Tour:
“Everything from, you know, the food, to the coffee on the range, the food, there’s a gift when you register for your wife and yourself,” Schauffele mentioned. “They go above and beyond to just make you kind of feel warm and almost like family.”
The tournament begins Thursday morning, with Schauffele paired alongside Collin Morikawa, a teammate from three Ryder Cups, at 10:55 a.m. ET.
