Markéta Vondroušová Faces Four-Year Ban from Tennis for Doping Test Refusal

Markéta Vondroušová, the 2023 Wimbledon champion, received a four-year ban from professional tennis after declining a doping test in December 2025. Her absence from this year’s Wimbledon, starting on June 29, marks a significant turning point in her career. The suspension will last until 2030, pending any appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).

The Offense and Tribunal Decision

In December 2025, Vondroušová refused a test by a Doping Control Officer (DCO) at her home around 8 p.m. Citing stress and safety concerns, the Olympic silver medalist rejected providing a sample. The International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) charged her and the independent tribunal found no compelling justification for the refusal. It aligned with the ITIA’s recommendation for a maximum four-year ban.

Vondroušová’s Defense

Vondroušová explained via Instagram about facing an “acute stress reaction” during the unexpected visit from the doping official. She shared that she suffers from an acute stress reaction and Generalized Anxiety Disorder, resulting in impaired judgment. Citing a past home attack on fellow player Petra Kvitová, Vondroušová highlighted her heightened anxiety.

During the tribunal, Vondroušová provided clinical evidence supporting her mental health condition. She noted the tester arrived outside of her one-hour whereabouts slot, leading to her reaction.

Understanding Anti-Doping Rules

Tennis players must provide a daily location and time slot for potential testing. However, random testing can occur at any time as part of anti-doping measures to safeguard clean sport. ITIA chief executive Karen Moorhouse emphasized unpredictability as essential for effective doping control.

Despite widespread misunderstanding among players and fans about testing outside designated hours, the one-hour slot isn’t the only time for testing. The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and related agencies occasionally conduct surprise tests, maintaining specific privacy parameters.

Consequences and Player Reactions

A refusal to test is treated on par with a positive doping result, leading to severe consequences. The four-year ban seeks to dissuade athletes from refusing tests. Russian player Vladislav Ivanov faced a similar ban for the same reason.

Vondroušová received widespread support from fellow tennis players after her announcement. Coco Gauff, Paula Badosa, Sloane Stephens, and others expressed solidarity. The Professional Tennis Players Association (PTPA) also highlighted the severity of the ban given her unblemished testing record.

Next Steps

The ITIA will issue a written decision in the future, and Vondroušová can appeal to CAS within 21 days after that. In the meantime, she can access player support and wellbeing resources from the ITIA. She remains unable to participate in any tennis-related activities pending the outcome of her planned appeal.
