Young Archaeologist Uncovers Rare Gemstone in Galilee

A sixth grader made a significant archaeological discovery at Korazim National Park, a location with biblical ties to Jesus’ ministry. The Israel Nature and Parks Authority (INPA) shared news of this find in early June. Korazim, linked to the biblical village of Chorazin, is mentioned in the New Testament as a place where residents witnessed Jesus’ miracles. Although they saw these wonders, they did not repent.

Korazim is located about two miles north of Capernaum, an ancient village central to Jesus’ teachings. The small gemstone, dating back to the sixth century A.D., features a pale-blue center. Alon Horowitz, a 12-year-old student, discovered it while participating in an excavation. The INPA and Ariel University organized this event.

“About 10 minutes before we finished digging, I saw something blue and special,” Horowitz shared in a statement.

This gemstone is identified as a Nicolo, a rare form of agate. Such stones were luxury items during the Roman and Byzantine periods. Excavation director Achia Kohn-Tavor suggested that a local elite might have worn it as part of an expensive ring. It was found inside a wealthy estate, indicating its owner belonged to an affluent household. The gem might have been worn by either a man or a woman.

Archaeologists believe the stone’s presence suggests long-distance trade links connecting Korazim to the wider Roman and Byzantine world. The stone was not locally sourced, highlighting the owner’s access to luxury goods. Alon Horowitz felt proud after understanding the significance of his find, receiving praise from his peers, teachers, and family.

This discovery is not the first by a young Israeli. In May, an 8-year-old boy found a 1,700-year-old Roman statuette fragment. Last year, a 3-year-old girl discovered a 3,800-year-old Canaanite amulet.
