Corey Heim achieved his first career Cup Series victory in the NASCAR race held at Naval Base Coronado. Despite hitting the wall twice, Heim’s No. 67 Toyota gained speed as the race progressed. Heim, a 23-year-old from Marietta, Georgia, showcased his skills on the challenging 16-turn, 3.4-mile street course.
After leading the final three laps, Heim overtook his teammate Tyler Reddick, who suffered a flat tire, and secured the victory. Bubba Wallace finished second, contributing to a 1-2 finish for 23XI Racing, co-owned by Denny Hamlin and NBA legend Michael Jordan. Reddick ended up in 25th place, affecting his standings lead.
This race marked the second inaugural street race in three years that resulted in a first-time winner in NASCAR. Shane van Gisbergen achieved similar success in the 2023 Chicago Street Race. Heim joins Ty Gibbs and Carson Hocevar as first-time winners this season. Veteran racer Kyle Larson praised Heim’s performance, highlighting his talent.
Hamlin, who managed three consecutive wins for Joe Gibbs Racing, finished 14th. Van Gisbergen’s race ended prematurely due to a crash caused by a collision between Connor Zilisch and Austin Hill. Zilisch, a rookie, experienced mixed fortunes after leading initial laps.
Christopher Bell handed the No. 20 Toyota to Brent Crews during an early caution, but Crews faced gearbox issues, finishing last. Bell, recovering from an injury, stated the decision was precautionary.
Jimmie Johnson experienced challenges in his second Cup start this season. He crashed into a tire barrier, finishing 28th. Johnson plans to make the 2027 Daytona 500 his final Cup race but remains open to competing in other series.
NASCAR continues its California stint at Sonoma Raceway on June 28, where van Gisbergen excelled last season.
