Charles Blow Reflects on the Impact of Mentorship

3 days ago 0

On Father’s Day, contributor Charles Blow shares his experiences of growing up without a father and the support he found in other men. Blow recounts how his parents’ divorce and his father’s alcoholism left a void in his life. Though his father was largely absent, Blow was fortunate to have grandfathers, uncles, neighbors, and coaches who became his mentors. These men offered the guidance and discipline that helped shape his life.

Blow desires similar support for other boys in need. Organizations like Son of a Saint in New Orleans play a crucial role in providing mentorship to young boys. Founded by Bivian “Sonny” Lee III in 2011, the organization aims to assist boys whose fathers have died or are incarcerated. Sonny, who lost his own father at the age of three, is dedicated to improving the lives of boys like himself.

During a visit to the organization’s headquarters located in the Bayou St. John neighborhood, Blow witnessed the various activities offered. The facility provides not only mentorship but also classes and meetings. Cooking classes are particularly popular, offering boys a chance to learn and bond. Each boy has a support team to address all aspects of their development, from academics to emotional support.

Blow observed a wellness class where boys participated enthusiastically, learning about mental health in a judgment-free environment. He spoke with 16-year-old twin brothers, Michael and Robert, who joined the program after their father’s death. They shared fond memories of attending summer camps, sponsored by the organization.

On Father’s Day, many of the boys celebrated with their mentors, expressing gratitude for the men who have taken on paternal roles in their lives. The support from mentors provides not only guidance but also emotional warmth and stability.
