The Oklahoma Sooners secured a 9-3 victory over the North Carolina Tar Heels in Game 1 of the College World Series finals on Saturday. Deiten Lachance played a key role by hitting two home runs off North Carolina ace Jason DeCaro. This win pushes Oklahoma one step closer to claiming the national championship.
The Sooners, now holding a 42-22 record, achieved a decisive win through a four-run fourth inning. They held the Tar Heels to only two runners reaching second base after an early three-run burst in the first inning. Pitcher Cord Rager, along with two relievers, effectively shut down the Tar Heels after their initial success.
Oklahoma claims two previous national baseball titles, dating back to 1951 and 1994. The team aims for its third title on Sunday, while North Carolina, still seeking its first national championship, plans to force a third game on Monday.
Jason DeCaro, who entered with an impressive 2.31 ERA, faced an unusual setback. In the fourth inning, Kyle Branch broke a 3-all tie with a two-run single, followed by Jason Walk’s RBI base hit and Camden Johnson’s single off reliever Walker McDuffie, making the score 7-3. DeCaro, with an 11-3 record before the game, was held responsible for all seven runs after never allowing more than three in prior starts.
Lachance’s early home runs in the first and third innings provided Oklahoma with a crucial lead. Known as ‘Big Maple,’ the 6-foot-5 Canadian has remarkably hit all 18 home runs in the last 32 games, including six in the past eight. The Sooners have hit 45 home runs in the last 17 games, with 28 coming from 11 NCAA Tournament matches. Their 10 home runs in four College World Series games are the highest since the event moved to Charles Schwab Field in 2011.
Rager, with a 7-3 record, overcame a rocky first inning, allowing three runs before regaining control. Gavin Jones relieved him in the sixth inning, and LJ Mercurius closed the game by pitching 1 2/3 innings.
A notable defensive play came from Carolina’s Carter French in the third inning. French managed an impressive catch under challenging conditions when his glove got caught under the padding atop the fence. The play was crucial in a game full of intense action.
