Investigation Underway After Anti-Muslim Attacks in Scotland

Counterterrorism officials are conducting an investigation following a violent spree in Scotland that left five men injured. The attacks, suspected to be motivated by anti-Muslim sentiment, commenced near a mosque in Edinburgh. Two men were attacked just before 9 p.m. on Friday, according to officials and BBC News.

The suspect, identified as a 36-year-old Scottish man, is accused of attacking three additional men in another part of the city. The victims, aged between 22 and 39, do not have life-threatening injuries. Three were hospitalized for their injuries.

The investigation follows a series of violent acts across Edinburgh, prompting concern and a coordinated police response.

Among the incidents, the suspect is alleged to have vandalized a car at a gas station, breaking its windows and leaving an axe inside. He was reportedly filmed on surveillance striking shelves within the station and later seen armed outside a pizzeria. Social media footage documented chaos in various areas of the city.

Police Scotland addressed the public, stating they prioritized safety amid multiple, swiftly unfolding events. Law enforcement apprehended the suspect around 9:30 p.m. local time. He remains in custody.

Assistant Chief Constable Catriona Paton labeled the event a ‘shocking attack’ and expressed her initial sympathies to the injured. ‘This was a shocking attack and my first thoughts are with those who were injured and most directly affected,’ she stated.

Paton reinforced community support, emphasizing unity against racism and faith-based violence in Scotland.

The suspect reportedly claimed he was ‘protecting the country’ upon being detained. The investigation involves thorough analysis to understand the full context. Counter Terrorism Policing supports the efforts, in coordination with the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service.

The Muslim Council of Britain condemned the actions, expressing concern over the incident. They linked the violence to recent racist acts in Belfast and criticized political rhetoric for demonizing groups.
