Jo Frost, the global parenting expert known as ‘Supernanny,’ is raising concerns over a trend where modern parenting practices disadvantage children. Frost emphasizes that prioritizing convenience over development leads to children lacking essential life skills.
Frost, a UK television personality, recently went viral with a video on social media. In the video, she critiques parenting techniques that, according to her, prevent children from becoming resilient and independent. Frost’s observations come from working with numerous families, where she sees a disturbing pattern of parents promoting dependence rather than encouraging independence.
“We’re keeping children in strollers who should be walking and building strength,” Frost remarked. She pointed out various scenarios, such as toddlers using pacifiers beyond their age, older children unable to brush teeth without aids, and others struggling with basic hygiene and table manners. These situations spark her question, “When did we stop teaching these life skills?”
On a recent appearance on “Fox & Friends,” Frost explained her concerns. She shared that parents often contact her about their children struggling with basic skills due to over-enabling. “You have to allow them to struggle a little,” she recommends, warning against raising a generation dependent on parental intervention.
Frost advises parents to steer away from “quick-fix” solutions and focus on “long-term goals” for their children’s development. Essential skills like personal hygiene, table manners, and chores can help foster independence. She encourages parents to engage children in outdoor activities like bike riding, running, and playing outside.
“Modern life is busy, but intention matters over time,” Frost said in her video. She stresses that when parents step in to do tasks for children, it removes chances for them to become capable. The goal is for children to cultivate their capabilities and build confidence in their skills.
