Trump Comments Spark Diplomatic Rift with Italy

4 days ago 0

A diplomatic rift has emerged between the United States and Italy following remarks made by President Donald Trump about Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. The dispute centers on a photograph issue from the recent G7 summit, which is escalating into a larger diplomatic concern.

Italy’s foreign minister canceled a scheduled visit to the U.S. on Friday. This decision was in response to Trump’s claims that Prime Minister Meloni had ‘begged’ for a photograph with him during the summit. Meloni refuted these claims, labeling them as ‘completely unfounded’ and asserting, ‘Neither I, nor Italy, ever beg.’

On Tuesday, Trump posted on Truth Social, stating, ‘Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni asked, over and over, for a picture with me during the G-7 meeting in France.’

Additionally, Trump criticized Meloni’s performance in Italy, attributing her declining popularity to Italy’s stance on the U.S. and Israel’s conflict with Iran. He noted, ‘She wouldn’t even let us use Italy’s landing strips or runways, a great logistical inconvenience.’

Trump further claimed that following the U.S. military success against Iran, Meloni is seeking to improve relations to boost her standing. He concluded, ‘Now, after the United States defeated Iran militarily, she wants to be friends again in order to get her “numbers up.” No thanks!!!’

This situation continues to develop, with more updates expected.
