Trump Unveils New Air Force One: The VC-25B Aircraft

4 days ago 0

President Donald Trump introduced a new Air Force One aircraft during a tour at a private hangar. The Boeing 747 jumbo jet, gifted by the Qatari government, is now known as the “VC-25B Bridge.” This luxury airliner has undergone a $400 million overhaul for military purposes. Changes include secure communications and anti-missile defense systems. The new design features dark blue, red, and gold colors chosen by Trump, replacing the previous Kennedy-era light blue.

Features of the New VC-25B Bridge Jet

The VC-25B Bridge aircraft is a modified Boeing 747-8i. Originally, it was a VVIP business jet for Qatar’s royal family. The Air Force aimed for quick delivery, so the interior largely remains unchanged. This allows travel with high-end amenities such as wood paneling and leather lounges without high costs. Trump stated, “This plane was transformed into a flying White House at a level of luxury that nobody has ever seen before.”

Specifications and Overhaul

Defense contractor L3Harris Technologies upgraded the aircraft to meet presidential standards. Additions include advanced defense systems and secure satellite communications. The plane’s exterior shows a new navy-blue, red, and white color scheme. Trump’s influence on this design began during his first term. President Joe Biden later reversed it but Trump reinstated the colors after returning to office. The Air Force plans to use similar colors for other government aircraft.

Trump plans to use the new aircraft for international travels, including a NATO summit in Ankara. His final trip on the current Air Force One was from the Group of Seven summit in France.

Cost and Controversy

While the plane was a gift, retrofitting it sparked controversy over its $934 million cost. This was partially funded by a classified missile defense program. Critics raised constitutional concerns about accepting such a gift from a foreign government. Concerns centered on the Emoluments Clause. Senator Patty Murray criticized the decision as a constitutional violation. Trump, however, dismissed these claims. The aircraft is technically a gift, with ownership transferring to Trump’s library foundation later.

Service Plans

The current presidential jets, known as VC-25As, will continue alongside the new aircraft. Operational needs will determine which plane is used for missions. An Air Force spokesperson confirmed the availability of all jets for the Presidential Airlift Group.
