The Alabama Crimson Tide, who reached the College Football Playoff under Coach Kalen DeBoer’s leadership last season, are preparing for a challenging return in 2026. The team needs to find a replacement for quarterback Ty Simpson, who was drafted in the first round by the Los Angeles Rams. Candidates for the position include Keelon Russell and Austin Mack.
Alabama is focused on enhancing its offense, especially in the running game. However, the team lost a key recruit, Hollywood Smothers, to Texas. Programs like Texas, LSU, and Georgia have been heavily investing in their rosters.
In an interview with Garry L. Harris of WVUA 23, DeBoer emphasized the need for increased fan support to attract elite players. He stated, “We’ve got to continue to grow. There’s no question. We’ve got to continue to adjust to the times. We’ve got to continue to push the envelope. We need the support of anyone that wants to be a part of it.”
DeBoer also highlighted the importance of NIL support, explaining that having a skilled staff is crucial but not sufficient without the resources to recruit top talent. “You can have an awesome staff, but you’ve got to have the NIL support to be able to get the players because they’re the ones that make the plays on Saturdays,” he added.
In April, DeBoer secured a seven-year contract extension, valued at $87.7 million, and holds a 20-8 record over his two seasons as head coach. However, Alabama’s start for the 2027 recruiting class has been slow, ranking No. 71 according to 247 Sports.
Despite these challenges, DeBoer remains confident in Alabama’s resources and competitiveness within the SEC. “I think we’re very competitive, and that’s what I ask,” DeBoer noted. He expressed confidence in the program’s capacity to provide unmatched support and investment for its athletes.
To regain the dominance experienced under former coach Nick Saban, the Crimson Tide needs to match the NIL funding levels of its SEC and Big Ten rivals.
