Data Breach Involving Princess Kate’s Medical Records
A former healthcare worker attempted to sell confidential medical information concerning Princess Kate’s abdominal surgery. This incident occurred at a prestigious private clinic frequented by the royal family, according to a statement from the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO).
Details of the Breach
The ex-employee was working at the London Clinic when the data breach was initially reported in March 2024. This was during a period when Princess Kate was secretly undergoing cancer treatment.
Investigation and Response
Britain’s privacy and data protection watchdog revealed the findings of its criminal investigation on Wednesday via a statement on its website. The ICO mentioned, “The ICO issued a now former healthcare professional from London with a formal caution in relation to an offense under section 170(5) of the Data Protection Act 2018….”
Misuse of Sensitive Information
The incident involved intentional misuse of highly sensitive personal information with an offer to disclose it for financial gain, signifying a severe breach of trust.
Enforcement Decision
The ICO evaluates evidence and public interest in all criminal investigations. In this case, a caution was deemed a suitable and proportionate enforcement action.
