NASCAR will make history this weekend by hosting its first race on a military base. The event takes place at Naval Base Coronado in San Diego and marks the U.S. Navy’s 250th anniversary. All three national series will compete on a new road course.
The Haas Factory Team, in partnership with Texas A&M University, has designed a special livery for the event. The No. 41 Chevrolet Camaro, driven by Cole Custer, will feature a tribute to former Naval aviator and the 41st president, George H.W. Bush. This special design will be showcased in Sunday’s Anduril 250: Race the Base.
Honoring President Bush
President Joe Custer of the Haas Factory Team expressed pride in highlighting John H.W. Bush’s legacy. He stated, “We’re proud to help tell this chapter of Texas A&M’s story. President Bush lived one of the greatest American lives, and we all benefit from his contributions. Racing the No. 41 in his honor and celebrating his achievements is rare and significant.”
President Bush’s Naval Legacy
George H.W. Bush enlisted in the Navy on his 18th birthday, becoming one of the youngest aviators during World War II. He served in the Pacific Theater and survived after being shot down in 1944.
His grandson, Sam Bush LeBlond, remarked on how much the tribute would have meant to his grandfather. “Naming a US Navy aircraft carrier after him was one of the proudest moments of his life. It symbolized service, duty, and patriotism. He would be incredibly touched to have his legacy celebrated at Naval Base Coronado and to know this tribute continues to share his values with new generations.”
The race is anticipated to be a memorable event, celebrating both NASCAR and the legacy of George H.W. Bush.
