The Chicago Cubs faced a challenging defeat against the Colorado Rockies, losing 3-2 in a walk-off during the ninth inning on Wednesday. The Rockies celebrated as pinch hitter Sterlin Thompson’s hit secured their victory. Shocked by the outcome, Cubs players and coaches remained on the field, absorbing the impact of the loss.
The defeat brought the Cubs’ record to .500. This marks their first time in two months reaching this statistic. The team has now lost ten consecutive series. They face the risk of a series sweep from a struggling Rockies team. Starting pitcher Edward Cabrera, one of the last to leave the dugout, watched the Rockies celebrate, indicative of the somber mood within the Cubs camp.
Left-hander Shota Imanaga delivered a strong performance with five shutout innings. Facing Michael Lorenzen, whose prior statistics showed flaws, one might expect a different outcome. However, Lorenzen limited the Cubs to one run on two hits. Moisés Ballesteros brought in the only run with a sacrifice fly in the fourth inning.
“We didn’t generate enough chances tonight,” Manager Craig Counsell stated. “Five hits with few at-bats in scoring positions, too few rallies, which caused our offensive effort to fall short.”
Imanaga effectively managed the Rockies’ hitters, allowing only two hits, walking two, and striking out seven. He joined a select group of Japanese-born pitchers succeeding at Coors Field. Despite his efforts, the Cubs’ bats were silent.
“I kept us in the game, but my recent starts haven’t helped us win,” Imanaga conveyed through an interpreter. “I will use today’s experience and aim to contribute to more victories.”
Once Imanaga left the game, the bullpen was tasked with holding the lead. Phil Maton and Caleb Thielbar maintained a scoreless record through two innings. Jacob Webb, noted for his consistency, entered in the eighth. Unfortunately, after allowing a single, TJ Rumfield hit a two-run homer, putting the Rockies ahead.
Manager Counsell reflected on Webb’s outing, saying, “Webb did his job, but runs occur occasionally. His recent performances have been strong, but insufficient run support cost us tonight.”
Cubs’ left fielder Ian Happ hit a game-tying home run in the ninth inning, offering the Cubs a glimpse of hope. Nonetheless, the Rockies responded quickly. In the ninth inning, Daniel Palencia faced immediate pressure. With runners on the corners, Thompson’s decisive single ended the game.

While the bullpen’s performance is notable, the main issue remains the Cubs’ offensive struggles. Ian Happ commented on this challenge, saying, “It’s confusing as we get players on base but fail to capitalize. Good teams have players left on base by season’s end, but we must seize the opportunities and keep faith in our process.”
Finding a solution for these offensive woes is crucial as the Cubs strive to turn their season around.
