Cubs Struggle in Loss to Rockies

2 weeks ago 0

The Chicago Cubs aimed to reignite their offense against one of the league’s weakest pitching staffs at the hitter-friendly Coors Field. However, on Tuesday night, their efforts fell flat. The Cubs opened their series with a tough 7-3 loss to the Colorado Rockies.

Starting pitcher Colin Rea struggled early, allowing five runs in the initial two innings. By the time he exited in the fifth inning, he had given up seven runs on nine hits, including two homers. Rea also walked three batters and hit one. Manager Craig Counsell aptly summarized the situation, saying, “We just didn’t do enough.”

“You’re behind, but we just didn’t do enough tonight. There were some balls well hit with men on base that didn’t result in anything, but we just didn’t get the big hit,” Counsell added.

Rea’s performance featured only five swings and misses from his 79 pitches, with his four-seam fastball producing just two misses out of 25 swings. Rea acknowledged the lack of sharpness, saying, “I was falling behind a lot, and then I thought the last inning and a half was a lot better, but overall, just a poor effort.”

The Cubs’ frustrations extended to their offense. They managed to score three or fewer runs for the fourth consecutive game. Their performance at Coors Field marked a struggle, with their lowest runs and extra-base hits totals since past series. They went 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position, leaving eight runners stranded.

Michael Busch expressed belief in the team despite the challenges, saying, “I feel like we’re having really good at-bats… sometimes you come up short. We have a ton of confidence in everyone to get the job done.”

The Cubs had opportunities against Rockies’ right-hander Tomoyuki Sugano, but their execution faltered. They fouled off 14 pitches left over the middle, including 10 fastballs. Counsell noted, “The pitch that we foul off, that’s the pitch you get to hit, and you miss it.”

The team remains dedicated to trusting their approach. Amid this trying period, few players are performing up to their potential. Fans have seen the Cubs struggle after a dynamic start to the season. Counsell reassured, “You start over tomorrow with it. There’s a lot of season in front of us, and a lot of good things can be in front of us.”
