The official cause of Matt Brown’s death has been revealed. The Okanogan County coroner’s office announced that he died by suicide. Contributing factors included “subsequent immersion in water” and “under the influence of methamphetamine.” He was 42 years old.
Matt Brown, known for his role on “Alaskan Bush People” from 2014 to 2019, battled addiction issues for several years before his death. On Saturday, his brother, Bear Brown, shared on social media that Matt was found dead. Authorities recovered a body from a river in Washington state.
“They found a body in the river a few hours ago, and it was positively identified as being Matt,”
Bear said in a TikTok video.
Bear mentioned that their brother, Noah, confirmed Matt’s identity. He expressed surprise about the circumstances of Matt’s death.
“I would have never suspected he would have hurt himself, honestly. He struggled for a long time, as I’ve mentioned, and I worried he was going to end up, like, OD’d or something like that. I didn’t think he would hurt himself,” Bear continued.
The Okanogan County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call about a man seen sitting in a shallow part of the river. The witness later saw the man face down in the water. A firearm was found near the location.
Following the news, the Brown family issued a heartfelt statement:
“It is with broken hearts that we share the loss of our beloved son, brother, uncle, and friend, Matthew Brown. To millions of viewers, Matt was known as one of the original stars of Alaskan Bush People. To us, he was so much more.”
The family described Matt as intelligent, curious, and creative, with a love for adventure and the outdoors. He was an outdoorsman, artist, and lifelong learner. Despite his struggles, Matt encouraged others to seek help for addiction and mental health issues.
The statement highlighted the family’s pride in Matt’s outreach efforts during his periods of sobriety. He touched many lives, offering hope and support to others facing similar challenges.
Matt’s battle with mental health and addiction was a long and difficult journey. The Browns experienced moments of hope and heartbreak but always believed in Matt’s potential to heal. Matt’s father, Billy Brown, who passed away in 2021, never lost faith in his son.
